Based on the theme of light and dimension, much of Heulwen’s work can be likened to tunnels, clasping the hand of the onlooker drawing them into another dimension.

Whilst journeying through these passageways the discerning eye may discover they are not the only soul to travel these paths. Revealing more than just a trick of the knife, the contrast between the dark and the light evokes an awareness of the deep yearnings which often feel out of reach. The light areas hold open the possibility of fulfilling these desires. For the romantic it say’s love is within reach. For the rationally minded it integrates the disparate world of concrete, earth and the world of the mind, others see them as images of hope.

The Artist has described the whole process of putting oil to canvas as a total adventure, without any preconceived ideas of what is about to take form. The choice of colour is the only prime consideration, with many paintings changing beyond recognition towards later stages.
